Transfer Permutations
A position by position approach on what's likely to happen this summer. MVE and Sheaf the key.
Goalkeeper
With the Swede likely out till Christmas, Coventry are at the moment left with Wilson and Collins to compete for the jersey for the 1st half of the season. Luke Bell will likely need a loan to get more experience. If a move can be found for Collins, then a loanee or experienced stop-gap might be bought in to fill the void.
Right-Back
Could be busy here with the Sky Blues already one short and with the vultures circling for MVE. Expect a younger RB to come in to develop whatever happens, Caleb Kporha and Richard Olise have been mentioned. If MVE does go (£12 million?) then Kesler-Hayden could be an obvious target.
Left-Back
This has been one of Coventry’s weaker areas for the past two seasons, although things have been complicated by Bidwell signing a new contract and then Dasilva suddenly improving. The club will be keen to move one of them on (most likely Bidwell) and make an improvement. Granada’s Miguel Ángel Brau (out of contract) has been strongly linked, Toffolo’s wages make that one unlikely.
Centre-Back
The right side seems pretty settled, Thomas has had a good season, and Lati provides solid back up and can cover other areas. Kitching nearly went in January, and Binks’ game time was drastically reduced in the latter half of the season. Coventry would be unlikely to recruit without moving one of them on. Binks would be the obvious one, but he has more development to come whilst Kitching would be an expensive asset to have as a back-up.
Centre-Midfield
Sheaf is very much the key here. Entering the final year of the contract, the Sky Blues will surely look to sell if he’s not going to extend his contract. His injury hit campaign may though limit interest/potential fee. Will there be a bid big enough to get him a move?
With Jamie Allen now staying, there is unlikely to be much movement here unless Sheaf is sold.
Attacking-Midfield
Rudoni has had a fantastic season, so it would take a colossal bid for the club to sell. Torp can play here, but further reinforcement is really needed. The club may look to Scandinavia for a development project.
Out-Wide
EMC and Sakamoto seem to have their positions locked down. With Wright and BTA able to play off the left there is less need to recruit in this area, unless they plan to Wright through the middle week-in week-out. If there is not more confidence in Raphael Borges Rodrigues than we realise, expect competition for Sakamoto to be found.
Up-Top
With Wright, BTA, Simms and Bassette, Coventry already have plenty of options. It would take a large bid for DK to sell Wright, and a hefty chunk to replace him. Simms’ lack of involvement in the play-offs seems to suggest Lampard may have made his mind-up on him, if they can recoup (most of) their money, expect him to move on.
If Simms does go, they could look for a target-man type, a McBurnie profile (available on a free following Las Palmas’ relegation), to help against low blocks. It maybe that they want to focus Wright on playing CF, so do not even look to recruit a replacement, this would allow Bassette more of an opportunity too. In this case expect them to find a direct reinforcement for EMC instead.
An interesting summer awaits, although likely to be quieter than previous seasons with an established core in place that are all under contract.
